Randy Wolf's debut for the Brewers was a success, Casey McGehee and Rickie Weeks homered and Milwaukee beat the Colorado Rockies 7-5 on Tuesday night. Wolf (1-0) struck out eight in 6 2-3 innings in his first start since signing a $29.75 million, three-year contract in the offseason to bolster Milwaukee's starting staff.
McGehee and Weeks did their part to help. McGehee hit a three-run homer in the first and Weeks added a solo shot off Rockies starter Greg Smith (0-1) in the fifth.

Trevor Hoffman gave up a run in a rocky ninth for his 592nd career save.
Milwaukee snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Rockies. Colorado's Ian Stewart hit his second homer in as many days and doubled and tripled.

Last winter, the Brewers tweaked the roster. This time, they face the prospect of wholesale changes. "There are a lot of question marks," manager Ken Macha told reporters late in the season. "I think you'll have a lot to write about."

Macha himself was among those question marks before general manager Doug Melvin declared that Macha would be back in 2010. The coaching staff will see some changes -- including the key pitching coach position -- and the roster figures to see plenty.

It's nothing new for Macha.

"When I managed in Oakland, we had free agents going left and right," he said. "It was guys like [Jason] Giambi, [Miguel] Tejada, and all four years I was there I had a different closer. There was always movement there.

Mark it down as another mysterious off-day for Brewers slugger Ryan Braun. Coming off a 4-for-14 series in Arizona in which he became the sixth player in history to hit 100 homers in his first three seasons, Braun was out of the lineup for Monday's series opener at Wrigley Field. It was Braun's third day off in eight days, counting the team's open date on Thursday, but neither Braun nor manager Ken Macha offered much in the way of an explanation.

"Just a day off," Macha insisted.

"Not playing," Braun said. "That's all I've got."

And that's all he would say, until he passed through the clubhouse a few minutes later.

"I don't mean to be a jerk. I just don't know what to say," Braun said, throwing his hands in the air. "Who knows?"

When Braun was on the bench for the Brewers' Sept. 7 game against Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals -- in which Carpenter went on to pitch a one-hit shutout -- Macha mentioned that Braun was getting treatment for a sore shoulder. Braun does get treatment on his right shoulder, but he has refused to acknowledge any physical ailments. He stood by that stance on Monday.

It was a weekend of personal milestones for the Brewers, topped on Sunday by first baseman Prince Fielder, who homered to drive in his 126th run of the season, tying Cecil Cooper for the single-season franchise record.
The fourth-inning shot to left -- the opposite field for the lefty swinger -- accounted for his club's first run in a 5-3 victory over the D-backs at Chase Field.

"I've never thought about [the record] until now," said Fielder, who also opened the Brewers' four-run seventh with a single. "It's really an honor to be mentioned with a guy like Cecil. He was a great first baseman, so it really is something special. This organization has had a lot of great players, so it's really a big deal. It's pretty cool."

Brewers reliever Mark DiFelice appears to have dodged a major bullet on Monday, when he traveled back to Milwaukee for an MRI scan that revealed only wear and tear in his aching right shoulder. That qualified as good news for DiFelice, who underwent major surgery following the 2001 season to repair a SLAP tear to the labrum in his shoulder and needed 2 1/2 years to feel 100 percent healthy again. DiFelice worried that he might have suffered a similar injury on Sunday, when he felt pain in the joint and left the Brewers' game in Arizona.

Instead, DiFelice will be shut down for at least four days before he's evaluated again. Brewers manager Ken Macha said he might have additional information about the plan for DiFelice on Tuesday, but surgery doesn't appear to be looming.

Prince Fielder is taking his pursuit of a 26-year-old Brewers record out on the road. Five RBIs on the team's just-completed homestand gave Fielder 125 this season, just shy of the franchise mark set by fellow left-handed-hitting first baseman Cecil Cooper in 1983. Fielder will continue his pursuit of the record when the Brewers begin a three-game series in Arizona on Friday night, and Cooper, the manager of the Houston Astros, will be watching the box scores.
"He's a good young player, and he's going to break a lot more [records] before he's done," Cooper said Wednesday while the Astros were in the middle of a series against the Braves.

Fielder is well aware of Cooper's accomplishments during his 11 seasons in Milwaukee and 17 seasons in the Major Leagues. Fielder ticked off some of Cooper's credentials, including a .298 career batting average and two big run-production seasons. Cooper led the American League with 122 RBIs in 1980, then tied Boston's Jim Rice for the lead in '83 with 126.

Casey McGehee snapped his bat over his knee after a fifth-inning strikeout, and that said it all for the Brewers on a frustrating homestand. Adam Wainwright was the latest opposing ace to shut down Milwaukee's offense, tossing seven scoreless innings in the Cardinals' 5-1 win over the Brewers at Miller Park on Wednesday. Albert Pujols hit a pair of home runs and drove in three to cap a three-game St. Louis sweep.

The Brewers finished their homestand with a 1-5 record and McGehee wasn't Milwaukee's only hitter feeling frustrated after the team scored 10 total runs over those six games. Chris Carpenter twirled a one-hit shutout on Monday, and Wainwright (18-7) was nearly as good, scattering five hits with six strikeouts and only one walk.

Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman is staying put, as the window to trade him to the team that claimed him off waivers closed on Monday with the two sides unable to reach an agreement, according to FOXSports.com. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin cannot, by rule, comment on waiver deals. But he told MLB.com on Sunday that the team hasn't had any discussions regarding Hoffman. The Giants -- who have Brian Wilson entrenched as the closer -- are reportedly the team that claimed Hoffman, perhaps to block him from other contenders.

Monday is the last day a player could be shipped to another team and be eligible to make the postseason roster.

Hoffman is 1-1 with a 1.76 ERA and is 29-for-31 in save chances this year. The 41-year-old right-hander is owed $6 million for 2009.
