Hoffman staying put with Brewers
Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman is staying put, as the window to trade him to the team that claimed him off waivers closed on Monday with the two sides unable to reach an agreement, according to FOXSports.com.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin cannot, by rule, comment on waiver deals. But he told MLB.com on Sunday that the team hasn’t had any discussions regarding Hoffman. The Giants — who have Brian Wilson entrenched as the closer — are reportedly the team that claimed Hoffman, perhaps to block him from other contenders.
Monday is the last day a player could be shipped to another team and be eligible to make the postseason roster.
Hoffman is 1-1 with a 1.76 ERA and is 29-for-31 in save chances this year. The 41-year-old right-hander is owed $6 million for 2009.
